BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called for a departure from traditional student politics, urging the youth to focus on leadership, development, and nation-building instead.

Speaking as the chief guest at a Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) rally in Shahbagh on Sunday, marking the anniversary of the July Uprising, Tarique addressed activists virtually. He underscored the need for political reform and forward-looking leadership.

“We must move beyond outdated models of student politics,” he said. “Let the youth cast their first vote for the sheaf of paddy — the symbol of the BNP. It’s time to replace the politics of slogans with the politics of service. Only competent leadership can realise the dreams of our martyrs and build the nation.”

Tarique also lauded the contributions of JCD activists during last year’s uprising, acknowledging their sacrifices.

“Power in this country comes from its people — for the BNP, and for everyone,” he said. “During the July Uprising, hundreds of Chhatra Dal members were injured, and over 2,000 arrested. A movement led by such courageous youth cannot be crushed.”

Reflecting on the nation’s journey, he said Bangladesh has come a long way in the 54 years since independence. “The people no longer want division. This is not about hollow political rhetoric — we are pursuing a politics centred on improving lives.”

In his message to students, Tarique highlighted the importance of technical and skills-based education.

“To compete in the global arena, we must focus on practical skills and technical knowledge,” he said. “If the BNP is voted to power, technical education will be introduced at the school level.”
