President pays respects at the National Memorial.
The newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today paid tribute to the martyrs of the Great Liberation War by placing a wreath at the National Memorial in Savar.
The President laid the wreath at 10:27am and observed a moment of solemn silence in remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence.
He was later accorded a guard of honour by a smartly turned-out contingent comprising members of the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force. He also signed the visitors’ book, paying tribute to the martyrs and highlighting the importance of the Liberation War’s ideals, democracy, unity and patriotism in building a peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh.
In his message, the President also remembered martyr President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, and national leader Begum Khaleda Zia for their contributions to the Liberation War and the struggle for democracy.
He pledged to work toward building a peaceful, just, democratic, welfare-oriented and prosperous Bangladesh while upholding the spirit of the Liberation War and the dignity of the martyrs.
Before leaving the National Memorial, President Alamgir planted a Magnolia Grandiflora sapling and watered it.
Military Secretary Major General A S M Bahauddin, Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam, State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman, Navy Chief Vice Admiral Khondkar Misbah Ul Azim, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan and the GOC of Savar Cantonment were present.
