Bangladesh secured a place in the semifinals of the ongoing SAFF Championship 2026 after Sri Lanka and Bhutan played out a 2-2 draw at the National Stadium on Sunday night.

The result confirmed Bangladesh's qualification for the last four with three points, following their 1-0 victory over Bhutan in the opening match. Their final group-stage fixture against Sri Lanka on November 11 will now decide who finishes top of the group. Earlier on Sunday, Pakistan became the first team to reach the semifinals after recording a comfortable 3-0 win over the Maldives.

Bangladesh head coach Thomas Dooley watched the Sri Lanka-Bhutan encounter from the VIP stand, taking the opportunity to assess his team's upcoming opponents.

Sri Lanka initially appeared more dangerous, but Bhutan broke the deadlock in the 34th minute through Dawa Tshering. Oliver James Kelaart equalised just a minute later with a long-range strike before Ahmed Waseem Razeek headed Sri Lanka into the lead in the 43rd minute.

Bhutan had a chance to level the score in the 68th minute, but Chencho Gyeltshen failed to convert a penalty. However, the forward redeemed himself eight minutes later with an excellent finish to secure a 2-2 draw. The result leaves both Sri Lanka and Bhutan with one point each.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh face the challenge of addressing their shortage of a recognised striker ahead of the crucial encounter against Sri Lanka. Head coach Dooley acknowledged the difficulty, emphasising the need for a more aggressive approach and greater attacking intent.

“If you don't have a number nine, it becomes difficult. You have to have the mentality to hurt teams, to be aggressive and to put pressure on them. Against players like theirs, you have to be strong. Otherwise, the goalkeeper will come out. If you are afraid to go in there, then you don't need to take anyone,” he said.

Midfielder Hamza Choudhury and forward Farhaan Ali Wahid are expected to rejoin the squad ahead of the Sri Lanka fixture, with both players scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Monday.
