Lionel Messi is set to reach another remarkable milestone in his illustrious career as he prepares to make his 200th appearance for Argentina in their World Cup group-stage match against Algeria in Kansas.

The achievement will make Messi only the second male footballer in history to earn 200 international caps, joining Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo, who currently holds the record with 228 appearances.

Since making his Argentina debut in 2005 — a match that ended prematurely with a red card against Hungary — Messi has gone on to become one of the greatest figures in the country's football history. Across 199 international matches, he has scored 117 goals and provided 64 assists, while spending more than 16,000 minutes on the field.

His international résumé includes 26 World Cup appearances, 39 Copa América matches and 72 South American World Cup qualifiers, during which he has registered 36 goals and 14 assists.

Messi has also enjoyed tremendous success with the national team, leading Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title, two Copa América crowns and a Finalissima triumph.

Despite continued speculation surrounding his future with the national side, the 39-year-old has made no announcement regarding retirement and remains fully committed to Argentina’s World Cup campaign.
