Bangladesh has urged the international community to put human rights at the heart of economic policymaking and governance, emphasising that progress should be assessed not only by economic growth but also by its impact on equality, human dignity and fundamental rights.

Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Irene Zubaida Khan, made the remarks at a high-level dialogue titled “The Political Economy of Human Rights” at UN Headquarters in New York on Tuesday, according to a press release received here.

She stressed the importance of equitable taxation, affordable development financing, sustainable debt management and reforms to the international financial architecture to ensure that economic progress supports the realisation of human rights.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk highlighted the growing concentration of economic and political power, rising military spending, increasing debt burdens and widening inequalities as major challenges to human rights. Speakers also called for a fairer international tax system, equitable debt restructuring, transparent and accountable economic governance, and meaningful civil society participation to tackle structural inequalities and protect vulnerable communities.

The discussions explored how conflicts, high debt-servicing costs and declining development assistance limit investments in education, healthcare, social protection and sustainable peace.

The dialogue brought together Morocco’s Ambassador Omar Hilale, Uruguay’s Ambassador Laura Dupuy Lasserre, South Africa’s Ambassador Mxolisi Nkosi and European Union Ambassador Stavros Lambrinidis. Human rights expert Ignacio Saiz, Professor Sakiko Fukuda-Parr and UN Independent Expert Attiya Waris also participated.

Jointly organised by the permanent missions of Bangladesh, Morocco, South Africa and Uruguay, the event highlighted the need to integrate human rights principles into international economic governance and global development frameworks beyond 2030.
