Burnham Supports Trump’s Proposal for Russia-Ukraine Energy Ceasefire
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Sunday voiced support for US President Donald Trump’s call for an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, urging both sides to halt attacks on energy infrastructure.
Earlier on Sunday, Trump announced that Moscow and Kyiv had agreed to suspend strikes on each other’s energy facilities, a development that reportedly surprised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, Russia has yet to confirm the agreement.
“Russia has intensified its strikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure over the weekend,” Burnham wrote on X, condemning the attacks.
He said the strikes targeted Ukrainian civilians, leaving them vulnerable to cold and darkness, and stressed that the UK strongly backed Trump’s call for an immediate and lasting halt to attacks on energy infrastructure.
Burnham added that he had discussed the matter with Zelensky on Saturday, noting that Ukraine was prepared to observe the ceasefire if Russia stopped its attacks.
He described an energy truce as the most effective way to restore the flow of energy and fuel to international markets.
Trump’s announcement came two days after he declared a temporary easing of US sanctions on Russian diesel exports. The decision sparked criticism from Ukraine and its European allies, who argued that easing the restrictions could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin.
