Saudi Arabia Says It Intercepted Houthi Drones Over Madinah and Riyadh
Saudi Arabia is involved in Yemen’s conflict, backing the country’s internationally recognised government.
The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militants said on Friday that it had intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone over the Madinah region, home to Islam’s second-holiest city.
Saudi Arabia is backing Yemen’s internationally recognised government in its fight against the Houthis.
The coalition also reported intercepting and destroying a drone over Riyadh province and a ballistic missile launched towards Saudi Arabia’s southern region.
In two posts on X, coalition spokesperson Turki al-Malki confirmed the interceptions, saying forces had destroyed the drone in Riyadh province and “a ballistic missile launched by the terrorist Houthi militia toward the southern region”.
Earlier on Friday, the coalition announced that it had intercepted and destroyed another Houthi drone in the Mecca region, which is home to Islam’s holiest city. The Houthis denied targeting Mecca.
“A drone launched by the terrorist Houthi militia has been intercepted and destroyed in the Mecca region,” Malki said in a post on X.
However, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree dismissed the Saudi statement as “a massive and egregious fabrication”.
