Saudi Arabia Says It Intercepted Houthi Drones Heading Towards Riyadh
The Houthis have imposed a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, targeting its tankers and seizing large stretches of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline.
The Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis said on Saturday that its forces intercepted two drones launched by the Iran-backed group and heading towards Riyadh.
“Air defences intercepted and destroyed two drones launched by the terrorist Houthi militia towards the Riyadh area,” the coalition spokesperson said in a post on X.
The Houthis have imposed a naval blockade targeting Saudi Arabia, attacking tankers and taking control of large areas of Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, a strategically important route for oil exports. The attacks have also contributed to a rise in energy prices, while the group has continued launching missiles towards Saudi territory.
Separately, the coalition spokesperson said Saudi air defences intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis towards Khamis Mushait in southwestern Saudi Arabia, home to an air base.
Houthi Political Bureau member Hezam Alasad said on Saturday that despite the operation’s scale and impact, the group’s armed forces considered it only a limited rehearsal for a broader escalation.
