Home Minister directs action against police members tied to ‘fascist’ forces

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Saturday directed the police to take action against members who maintain contact with “fascist” forces, warning that those involved could face legal measures, including treason charges.

He made the remarks while addressing the medal presentation ceremony of Police Week 2026 as the chief guest at Rajarbagh Police Lines in the capital.

The home minister said some police members were still in contact with “fascist” forces and providing them with various information.

He warned that the government would take necessary legal action, including filing treason cases, against police personnel found violating discipline.

Salahuddin also instructed the police to use intelligence information to identify and bring “fascist associates” of the banned Awami League under the law. He announced rewards for police members who contribute to the arrest of such individuals.

Highlighting the police’s role in maintaining internal security, peace and order, and upholding the rule of law, the home minister said their contribution was indispensable.

He said police were the most visible representatives of the state and remained in direct contact with citizens. When people face crime or feel threatened, he noted, the police are often their first point of contact.

“We want to build a police force that is modern in efficiency and professionalism, technologically capable, humane in its behaviour, firm in enforcing the law, impartial in carrying out its duties, and a symbol of public trust and confidence,” he said.

Referring to declining public confidence in the police, Salahuddin said the government had taken several initiatives since assuming responsibility to improve the situation.

He said efforts were underway to restore the police’s image and rebuild public confidence through institutional, legislative and administrative measures.

The home minister also urged police personnel to recognise the importance of maintaining morale and earning the trust of the public.

At the ceremony, Salahuddin presented PPM and BPM medals to 98 police members.

Senior Home Ministry Secretary Manzur Morshed Chowdhury, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir and other senior police officials attended the event.
