Garment workers block Tejgaon road demanding unpaid wages, causing traffic disruption
Garment workers staged a road blockade in Dhaka’s Tejgaon Industrial Area on Tuesday, demanding the payment of overdue wages and causing severe traffic disruption in the area.
The protest began around 10:15am when workers took to the streets and occupied a key road near Love Road, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill.
According to Tejgaon Industrial Area Police, the workers blocked the main road to press their demand for unpaid salaries. The sit-in triggered heavy congestion, with traffic backing up on surrounding roads and vehicles stranded on both sides of the affected route.
Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbubur Rahman said the protesters were workers of Nasa Garments. He said traffic movement had come to a complete halt due to the blockade and noted that the workers had resorted to similar demonstrations in the past over the same issue.
Around 100 to 150 workers were participating in the protest. Senior police officials were at the scene attempting to ease the situation, while discussions with the workers were underway to resolve the dispute.
