Mirza Fakhrul: Interim Government and Consensus Commission Have Betrayed the People

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused the interim government and the National Consensus Commission of betraying the people in the name of reform.

Speaking at a discussion organized by the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) at the Jatiya Press Club on Friday to mark the party’s 53rd founding anniversary, Fakhrul said the commission’s final recommendations for implementing the July National Charter sharply deviated from what the political parties had originally agreed upon.

“When the commission submitted its report to the Chief Adviser, many points were altered, and the dissenting notes meant to be included were completely ignored,” he said. “We placed our trust in them, but they broke that trust and deceived the people — something we never expected.”

The BNP leader also criticized those calling for a referendum before the national election, saying they were trying to mislead the public and disrupt the democratic process.

“Those creating confusion and taking to the streets over this matter should stop deceiving the people,” Fakhrul urged. “Do not oppose the election the nation has been waiting for.”

Without naming Jamaat-e-Islami, he appealed to the party to heed the public’s demand for a fair vote.
“You opposed the Liberation War in 1971 — please, do not stand against the people’s right to vote now,” he said.

Fakhrul warned that anyone acting against the will of the people would face rejection. “The people of this country never forgive betrayal. Step away from that path. Take part in the election, and let the people’s mandate be restored through their votes — that’s what we all seek,” he added.

On the subject of reforms, the BNP secretary general said his party had already initiated the process and remained committed to implementing the agreed changes.
“We want reforms and have already begun. We signed the charter, and we have stayed true to our commitments — we will carry out the reforms we agreed upon,” he affirmed.

Accusing certain political quarters of plotting to delay or derail the upcoming election, Fakhrul said, “A vested group is trying desperately to obstruct the polls. But we are determined to move forward. We want to form a national government with those who have stood beside us over the past 15 years.”

He urged all political parties to ensure a peaceful, competitive, and credible election. “Let us make this election meaningful. Let us build a government truly chosen by the people,” he said.
