From the Dream of Unity to the Reality of Division

Just two years ago, 5 August symbolized an extraordinary moment of national unity. People from different political beliefs, social backgrounds, and walks of life came together with a shared aspiration for freedom and a more just Bangladesh.

Hundreds of thousands took to the streets hoping to build a nation free from discrimination. Many of those who joined the movement had no formal political affiliation. They rallied not under party banners but around common demands for equality, democracy, human rights, and accountable governance. The people themselves became the driving force behind one of the country's most significant political transformations.

Two years later, however, many observers question whether those aspirations have endured.

On 4 August, a day before the second anniversary of the mass uprising, clashes broke out at several educational institutions in Dhaka involving activists of Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir. The violence highlighted the growing polarization among groups that had once stood on the same side during the 2024 movement.

The defining spirit of 5 August was the belief that Bangladesh could move beyond divisions of politics, religion, community, and social identity. That vision formed the foundation of what many came to describe as the "July spirit."

Today, critics argue that the country has drifted away from that ideal. They contend that political polarization has intensified, public discourse has become increasingly confrontational, and distrust has deepened across society. Concerns about political rivalry, social tension, religious differences, and declining civic values have raised difficult questions about whether the hopes that inspired the movement have been fulfilled.

Why has the sense of unity faded? Why has the optimism of the mass uprising given way to renewed division? These questions continue to shape public debate as Bangladesh reflects on the legacy of the events of 2024.
