The Election Commission (EC) has updated its list of election symbols amid widespread criticism, adding the ‘Shapla Koli’ (Water Lily Bud) symbol.

EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said further revisions could be made if necessary.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday (October 29) afternoon after an inter-ministerial meeting at the EC building, Akhtar Ahmed clarified that since the symbol ‘Shapla’ (Water Lily) is not listed in the regulations, no party can be allocated that symbol.

He explained that the previous list of symbols had drawn significant criticism, prompting the removal of 16 symbols while retaining 119.

When asked about the inclusion of ‘Shapla Koli’, he said, “It was not added at anyone’s request. There is a difference between the ‘Shapla’ and ‘Shapla Koli’ symbols. The Commission decided to include it on its own judgment. Some symbols were removed and others added based on feedback.”

Akhtar Ahmed stressed that the decision was not influenced by any political party’s demand. “The EC included ‘Shapla Koli’ independently. If needed, the list may be revised again in the future,” he added.
