The authorities of Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia have suspended 19 teachers and 11 officials and staff members for their alleged involvement in anti-July uprising activities.

In addition, 33 students have been expelled, and their academic certificates have been cancelled. The decision was made at the university’s 271st syndicate meeting held on Thursday, a senior syndicate member confirmed.

According to the decision, a total of 19 teachers and 11 officials and employees were suspended for their alleged roles during the July–August uprising. The syndicate also formed a committee, headed by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Nakib Mohammad Nasrullah, to make the final decision on disciplinary actions.

Meanwhile, the syndicate approved the expulsion of 33 students found involved in the same incident. Those who have already completed their studies will have their certificates revoked, while the currently enrolled students will be expelled.

Earlier, on March 15, the university had formed a five-member investigation committee led by Professor Dr. Aktar Hossain, chairman of the Al-Hadith and Islamic Studies Department, to identify individuals allegedly linked to anti-July activities.

The committee determined their involvement based on written and oral testimonies from witnesses, video footage, and media reports. Upon receiving the report, the authorities issued show-cause notices to the accused individuals. After reviewing the findings, the syndicate made its final decision at Thursday’s meeting.

Among the suspended teachers are Professor Dr. Mahbubar Rahman (Electrical and Electronic Engineering), Professor Dr. Paresh Chandra Barman and Professor Dr. Tapan Kumar Godder (Information and Communication Technology), Professor Dr. Debashish Sharma (Economics), Assistant Professor Shahidul Islam (Human Resource Management), Professor Dr. Baki Billah and Professor Dr. Robiul Hossain (Bangla), Professor Dr. Kazi Akhtar Hossain and Professor Dr. Shelina Nasrin (Accounting and Information Systems), Professor Dr. A. H. M. Aktarul Islam, Professor Dr. Mia Rasiduzzaman, and Associate Professor Dr. Afroza Banu (English), Professor Dr. Mahbubul Arfin (Management), Professor Dr. Shahjahan Mondal and Professor Dr. Reba Mondal (Law), Assistant Professor Majedul Haque (Marketing), Professor Dr. Amjad Hossain (Al-Fiqh and Law), Assistant Professor Mehedi Hasan (Law and Land Management), and Associate Professor Jayshri Sen (Computer Science and Engineering).

The suspended officials are Alamgir Hossain Khan, Abdul Hannan, Walid Hasan Mukut, Abdus Salam Selim, Ibrahim Hossain Sona, Ukil Uddin, Jahangir Alam Shimul, J. M. Elias, Tofazzel Hossain, Sheikh Abu Siddique Rokon, and Masudur Rahman.

Among the expelled students are IU BCL General Secretary Nasim Ahmed Joy, Vice-President Munshi Kamrul Hasan Anik, Joint General Secretary Hussain Majumder, Law Affairs Secretary Shakil Ahmed, Organising Secretary Liafat Hossain Rakib, Deputy Cultural Affairs Secretary Anik Kumar, Literary Secretary Abdul Alim, and Sports Secretary Bijon Roy, among others.
