BNP Secretary General and Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday urged the public to disregard rumours surrounding the resignation of President Mohammed Shahabuddin.

Speaking at a seminar at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka, Fakhrul rejected the speculation and appealed for calm amid widespread discussion over the President's position.

He said that while democracy is facing increasing challenges worldwide, Bangladesh remains firmly committed to upholding democratic values.

"The present government is always accountable to the people," he said.

Fakhrul also stated that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is leading the country with a development-focused vision and reaffirmed the government's commitment to delivering on the promises made by the BNP ahead of the national election.

Commenting on the international situation, he said ongoing conflicts in different parts of the world have contributed to instability in the global economy and political landscape.

He added that Bangladesh aims to maintain constructive relations with all countries while ensuring that national interests remain the top priority in its foreign policy.
