Litton Poised to Replace Miraz as Bangladesh's ODI Captain

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is poised to appoint Litton Das as the new One Day International (ODI) captain, replacing Mehidy Hasan Miraz, with multiple board sources confirming the development to Daily Sun on Monday.

Towhid Hridoy is expected to be named vice-captain across the white-ball formats, while Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as Test captain, restoring Bangladesh's two-captain structure with separate leaders for red- and white-ball cricket.

The proposal is likely to be tabled and approved at the BCB board meeting at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Wednesday.

Sources said the board initially considered reinstating Shanto as ODI captain but ultimately opted for a single leader across both limited-overs formats. With Litton already captaining the T20I side and Shanto focusing on Tests, the move is seen as a logical step.

The board also views Hridoy as a future leadership prospect. The middle-order batter captained Bangladesh in the recent T20I series against Australia and later led the Tigers to a 2-1 comeback series win over Zimbabwe after losing the opening match.

Miraz was appointed ODI captain on 12 June 2025, succeeding Shanto, and his tenure was extended by the BCB in April this year until the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

However, Bangladesh's performances under his leadership, particularly in overseas conditions, have fallen short of expectations. The Tigers won only two of their 13 away ODIs during Miraz's tenure.

His appointment had introduced a three-captain system, with Shanto leading the Test team, Miraz the ODI side and Litton the T20I squad. That arrangement now appears set to end after just over a year.

If the proposal receives formal approval at the board meeting, Bangladesh will revert to a two-captain model, with Litton leading both white-ball teams and Shanto remaining in charge of the Test side.

Bangladesh last followed such a structure before Miraz's appointment. The team previously had three captains in 2022, when Shakib Al Hasan led the Test side, Tamim Iqbal captained the ODI team and Mahmudullah was in charge of the T20I outfit.
