Awami League is a ‘mafia gang’, not a political party: Zahed Ur Rahman

Condemning the recent attack on actress Azmeri Haque Badhon on foreign soil, Prime Minister’s Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr Zahed Ur Rahman has described the Awami League as a “mafia gang” rather than a political party.

He made the remarks in response to a question from journalists during his regular weekly briefing at the conference room of the Press Information Department at the Secretariat on Tuesday (8 September).

The adviser said the Awami League’s true character and identity have been repeatedly exposed through its actions.

He questioned whether a party that lacks even a basic sense of responsibility and shows little regard for the public interest should be allowed to conduct political activities in Bangladesh.

“I do not consider the Awami League a political party. It is a mafia gang,” he said.

Referring to the attack on actress Badhon, Zahed Ur Rahman said being targeted by a “mafia gang” demonstrated that she had been on the right path. Recalling her courageous role during the July uprising, he described the incident as a form of recognition and honour for the actress.

He further said that legal proceedings against the alleged mafia network had already begun and assured that the government would not allow the matter to be overlooked.

Rejecting concerns over possible future attacks, the adviser said there was no reason to fear individuals affiliated with Sheikh Hasina, noting that even a ruler like her had ultimately been forced to leave the country.
