Magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes Tibet, tremors felt across Nepal

A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck the Tibet Autonomous Region on Wednesday, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometres (21.75 miles), with tremors felt in several parts of neighbouring Nepal, briefly triggering panic among residents.

Authorities reported no immediate casualties or significant structural damage following the quake.

The tremor came just days after severe flooding devastated parts of the rugged Nepal-Tibet border region. The combination of recent floods and continued seismic activity has raised concerns over the area’s vulnerable infrastructure, prompting disaster management teams to closely monitor the mountainous terrain for possible aftershocks and landslides.
