Foundation Stone Laid for July Memorial at DU
Dhaka University (DU) on Wednesday laid the foundation stone of the July Memorial, a monument dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives during the July 2024 mass uprising.
The foundation stone was inaugurated by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof ABM Obaidul Islam at 10:38am as part of the university's programme marking the second anniversary of the uprising.
The ceremony was attended by the fathers of July martyrs Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mugdho, Farhan Faiyaz and Shaykh Ashabul Yamin, along with the university's pro-vice chancellors, treasurer, deans, proctor, teachers, officers and students.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Obaidul described the July mass uprising as a defining moment in Bangladesh's history.
"On this day two years ago, the July mass uprising opened a new chapter for Bangladesh. The sacrifices of the martyrs made the dream of a new Bangladesh possible," he said.
The Vice-Chancellor paid tribute to those who were killed and injured during the movement and offered prayers for the eternal peace of the departed souls.
He said the July Memorial was being built to ensure that the courage and sacrifices of the martyrs remain remembered by future generations.
Prof Obaidul also accused the former Awami League government of curbing democratic rights and failing to reflect the aspirations of the people during its time in power.
He further alleged that the then Dhaka University administration had suppressed dissenting voices on campus.
Concluding his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor urged everyone to remain vigilant to ensure that "fascism never returns" to the country.
