Iran says Pakistan Army chief Asim Munir will visit Tehran on Monday.

Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, will travel to Tehran on Monday as part of ongoing efforts to promote peace and regional security, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Sunday, according to a ministry statement.

Pakistan has assumed a mediating role in talks between Iran and the United States aimed at ending the conflict that began after US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February.

Two Pakistani government sources also confirmed Munir’s visit to Reuters. One source said Islamabad and Tehran had been maintaining direct contact, while another said the discussions would cover recent developments, including US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose tougher sanctions on Iran.

The source said Munir would discuss peace efforts under an Islamabad memorandum of understanding, Trump’s sanctions warning, developments following the Pakistan-Turkey-Saudi agreement, and issues involving the Houthis with Iranian officials.

The visit comes as tensions rise, with Iran warning of a military response to proposed US sanctions that could further weaken its already struggling economy.

Munir’s visit will coincide with Washington’s planned announcement on Monday of details of the new sanctions, which US officials have described as potentially “the toughest sanctions in history” against Iran.

Trump has warned that countries providing “any type of lifeline to Iran” could face economic consequences as Washington seeks to further isolate Tehran.

Meanwhile, oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have nearly come to a halt, with Iran threatening to target unauthorised oil tankers attempting to pass through the strategically important waterway. Tehran’s economy is already facing severe pressure from existing sanctions.
