Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary seat falls vacant following Mirza Fakhrul’s assumption of presidency.
The Bangladesh Parliament Secretariat has officially declared the Thakurgaon-1 parliamentary seat vacant following Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s assumption of office as the country’s new President.
Mirza Fakhrul, who won the Thakurgaon-1 constituency in the 13th Jatiya Sangsad election, took office as President on Friday. Under Article 50(4) of the Constitution, his parliamentary seat became vacant from the day he assumed the presidency.
The notification was signed by Barrister Md Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan, secretary of the Law Making Branch-2 under the Legislative Support Wing.
The Parliament Secretariat forwarded the notification to the government printing press for publication in an extra issue of the Bangladesh Gazette.
A copy was also sent to the Election Commission Secretariat to take the necessary steps for holding a by-election in the constituency.
Copies of the notification were further sent to the Cabinet secretary, Prime Minister’s Office, Speaker and Deputy Speaker’s offices, Leader of the Opposition and other concerned authorities for information and required action.
