The Law Ministry has issued an ordinance amending the Representation of the People Order (RPO), mandating that all candidates must contest elections under their respective party symbols, even when running as part of an alliance.

The update was confirmed on Tuesday morning, according to official sources.

The amendment to Article 20 of the RPO has drawn objections from several political parties. Under the new provision, candidates nominated by an alliance are still required to use their individual party’s electoral symbol.

Previously, candidates from registered political alliances were permitted to contest using the symbol of any coalition partner. This allowed smaller parties within alliances to use the symbol of a larger partner, and several candidates had successfully won elections under that arrangement.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has objected to the amendment, submitting a written appeal to the Chief Election Commissioner urging that the previous provision be reinstated.
