Daily transactions through Bangladesh’s homegrown QR payment platform, Bangla QR, have crossed Tk 1.10 billion, marking a significant surge following the mandatory introduction of a unified, interoperable QR code nationwide.

Bangladesh Bank (BB) highlighted the sharp growth in Bangla QR usage in a press release issued on Sunday.

According to the latest data, the number of daily Bangla QR transactions has nearly doubled since July 1, while their total value has almost tripled.

The central bank made the use of Bangla QR mandatory for all merchants from July 1, requiring them to replace proprietary QR codes with the unified system as part of its “One Country, One QR” initiative to create a nationwide interoperable digital payment network.

At the beginning of July, customers made an average of 178,000 Bangla QR transactions a day, worth around Tk 373.30 million. Over the past week, the daily average rose to 303,000 transactions, while the transaction value climbed to approximately Tk 1,103.8 million.

Merchant adoption has also expanded rapidly. The number of businesses using Bangla QR increased from about 1.6 million on July 1 to nearly 3 million, reflecting growing acceptance of the platform across the country.

Officials said both private and state-owned banks have played a key role in expanding the unified QR infrastructure, allowing customers to make payments seamlessly through bank accounts and mobile financial services using a single QR code.

The central bank expects the continued expansion of Bangla QR to boost cashless transactions, reduce fragmentation in the digital payment system and further strengthen Bangladesh’s digital financial ecosystem.
