Tuchel Backs Bellingham but Says England Must Improve
Thomas Tuchel acknowledged Jude Bellingham's assessment that England showed great determination in their 2-1 World Cup quarter-final victory over Norway, but insisted his side must produce a higher standard of football.
Bellingham scored both goals after Norway took the lead, helping England book a place in the semi-finals. After the match, the midfielder defended his teammates' display despite suggestions that Tuchel had been dissatisfied with the performance.
"It was a difficult game," Bellingham said. "The players worked incredibly hard again, and they deserve a lot of credit for the effort they put in."
Asked whether he agreed with Bellingham's comments, Tuchel praised his players' commitment and resilience.
"Absolutely. No one questions their effort," the England manager said. "I'm impressed by their work rate, team spirit, belief and ability to overcome adversity. They deserve enormous credit for finding ways to win."
However, Tuchel stressed that England are capable of much more.
"As a football coach, I believe we can and must play better," he said. "Overall, it wasn't a high-quality game. We've produced better performances, and I still believe this team has to improve its football."
Bellingham and Kane leading the way
Bellingham and captain Harry Kane have been England's driving force in attack, combining for 12 of the team's 13 goals at the tournament.
While Tuchel hopes other players will contribute more in the final third, he is delighted to have two match-winners in his squad.
"We need to improve our attacking play to bring more players into scoring positions," he said.
"But Jude and Harry are decisive players. They embrace responsibility, have exceptional quality and consistently deliver in key moments. There's nothing wrong with relying on players like them."
"We're fortunate to have two top-class footballers who complement each other so well and continue to decide matches for us."
