BB Governor orders Sammilito Islami Bank to resume normal operations
Bangladesh Bank (BB) Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman today directed the chairman and managing director of Sammilito Islami Bank PLC to take all necessary measures to safeguard depositors’ interests and restore normal banking operations as soon as possible.
The governor issued the directives during a meeting with Sammilito Islami Bank Chairman Kazi Shairul Hasan and Managing Director Abedur Rahman Sikder at Bangladesh Bank this morning, according to a press release.
BB Deputy Governors Dr Md Habibur Rahman, Dr Md Kabir Ahmed, Md Sarwar Hossain and Md Anisur Rahman also attended the meeting.
The governor outlined three key priorities for the bank’s management.
First, he instructed the authorities to clearly inform depositors that there would be no “haircut” on their profits, noting that confusion still persists among customers over the issue.
Second, he said repayments to depositors are already being made under the scheme announced on December 29, 2025. He directed the bank to take steps to allow individual depositors, from next Tuesday (September 1), to withdraw funds from Al-Wadiah current accounts, Mudaraba savings accounts and Mudaraba term deposits according to their needs, beyond the limits set under the original scheme where necessary.
Finally, the governor instructed Sammilito Islami Bank, which has a capital base of Tk 35,000 crore, to take all necessary steps to restore regular banking operations at the earliest.
