An emergency joint meeting of major stakeholders in Bangladesh's road transport sector was convened amid growing unrest triggered by recent government decisions on vehicle phase-outs.

The meeting brought together leaders from the Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association, Bangladesh Bus-Truck Owners Association, Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation, and other affiliated bodies. The objective was to chart a unified response to the developments.

Tensions have flared in the transport sector following the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority’s (BRTA) recent enforcement of policies aimed at removing vehicles over 20 to 25 years old from operation. These measures—including fines, vehicle seizures, and other punitive actions—have provoked widespread anger among transport owners and workers.

In response, transport owners and workers in several regions have already launched strike programmes, causing significant disruptions in road transport and raising fears of broader escalation.

Presided over by Alhaj Kofil Uddin Ahmed, President of the central committee of the Road Transport Owners Association, the emergency session gathered both owners’ and workers’ representatives to assess the situation and develop a coordinated strategy.

Further announcements are expected following the meeting's deliberations on the implications of the government’s phase-out policy and its impact on the future of public and commercial transport services in the country.
