The scale of killings from Israeli strikes on Lebanon on Wednesday is “horrific,” the UN human rights chief has said, calling on the international community to help end the unfolding “nightmare.”

At least 112 people were killed and 837 others injured as Israel carried out an unprecedented wave of attacks in Lebanon, according to the latest figures from the Lebanese health ministry.

Volker Turk, the United Nations’ human rights chief, condemned the assault, describing the casualty figures as deeply alarming.

“The scale of the killing and destruction in Lebanon today is nothing short of horrific,” he said in a statement.

“Such carnage, coming just hours after a ceasefire agreement with Iran, is almost impossible to comprehend. It places immense strain on an already fragile peace that civilians urgently need.”

The statement added that mass casualties have been reported and hospitals are overwhelmed.

A UN Human Rights team visiting a strike site in Beirut reported widespread devastation, with bodies scattered among the rubble.

‘Prompt investigations’

Turk stressed that international humanitarian law clearly requires the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure.

“Every attack must adhere to the fundamental principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution to safeguard civilians,” he said.

“These principles are non-negotiable and must be upheld at all times, regardless of the circumstances.”

He also called for immediate and independent investigations into all alleged violations, with accountability for those responsible.

Lebanon became directly involved in the regional conflict on March 2, when the Iran-backed group Hezbollah began launching rockets into Israel following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Turk also condemned Hezbollah’s missile and drone attacks on northern Israel, urging all sides to cease hostilities immediately.

The conflict has displaced more than a million people in Lebanon, while Israel has launched a ground offensive in the south.

“The scale of these actions, along with statements from Israeli officials suggesting plans to occupy or annex parts of southern Lebanon, is deeply concerning,” Turk said.

“The international community must act swiftly to end this nightmare.

“Efforts to restore peace across the region will remain incomplete as long as the Lebanese people continue to face bombardment, displacement, and fear of further attacks.”
