Donald Trump urged leaders of several Muslim-majority countries to join the Abraham Accords and normalize ties with Israel once the Iran war comes to an end
President Donald Trump told leaders of several Arab and Muslim-majority countries during a conference call on Saturday that if a deal is reached to end the Iran war, he wants their nations to normalize relations with Israel by joining the Abraham Accords, according to two US officials familiar with the conversation.
The remarks underscored Trump’s broader Middle East agenda following the war, with a Saudi Arabia-Israel peace agreement seen as the key objective, although regional tensions and Israel’s upcoming election make any immediate breakthrough unlikely.
During the call, Trump spoke with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Bahrain about the emerging agreement with Iran.
Several leaders, including UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, reportedly voiced support for the deal. According to a US official, the leaders told Trump: “We are with you on this deal. And if it doesn’t work, we will be with you too.”
A US official said Trump informed the leaders he would next speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and expressed hope that Netanyahu would eventually join a future call alongside them.
Trump also told the leaders that once the Iran conflict ends, he expects countries that are not already part of the Abraham Accords or do not have peace agreements with Israel to establish formal ties with the Jewish state.
The request reportedly caught several leaders — particularly those from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Pakistan, which do not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel — off guard. One US official said there was a moment of silence on the call before Trump jokingly asked whether they were still on the line.
Trump later said his advisers Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff would follow up on the issue in the coming weeks.
In a Truth Social post on Sunday, Trump thanked Middle Eastern countries for their support and said their cooperation would be “further enhanced and strengthened” by joining the Abraham Accords.
He also floated the possibility of Iran one day joining the accords — a move that would require Tehran to recognize Israel, something the Iranian regime has long rejected.
US Senator Lindsey Graham backed Trump’s push, saying that if Arab and Muslim nations joined the Abraham Accords as part of a broader Iran agreement, it could become “one of the most consequential” developments in Middle East history.
However, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has become more cautious about normalization with Israel over the past year amid regional tensions and differences with Israel’s current government.
Saudi officials continue to insist that Israel commit to a clear and irreversible path toward a Palestinian state before Riyadh agrees to normalize relations — a condition the Israeli government currently rejects.
