The Dhaka North City Corporation has deployed 16,000 workers to manage waste during Eid

The Dhaka North City Corporation has deployed around 16,000 workers to remove sacrificial animal waste during Eid-ul-Azha, aiming to maintain a clean and hygienic environment across the city.

DNCC Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan said comprehensive preparations have been taken involving the waste management, transport, engineering and property management departments to ensure smooth disposal of waste during the festival.

According to DNCC, nearly 6,500 sanitation workers, 4,500 household waste collectors and about 5,500 volunteers will work in the field from Eid day to ensure the quick removal of sacrificial waste. Volunteers will also oversee cleanliness activities across all wards.

Last year, DNCC removed 20,889 tonnes of sacrificial waste during Eid-ul-Azha, including 10,616 tonnes on Eid day alone. A similar target has been set for this year.

To facilitate the operation, DNCC will distribute 1.63 million polythene bags for waste disposal and keep 3,600 sacks of bleaching powder ready for disinfection after animal slaughter. A total of 752 vehicles and heavy equipment — including trucks, dumpers, payloaders and water tankers — will be used in the drive. Of these, 405 are rented vehicles, 261 are DNCC-owned and 86 are privately managed.

A temporary central control room will be established at Nagar Bhaban in Gulshan-2 to coordinate waste management activities. Residents can contact the control room at +880255052084 and 16106.

DNCC Public Relations Officer Md Zobayer Hossain said training is being provided to 1,000 meat processors across 54 wards to promote proper slaughtering and waste management practices.

He also said awareness campaigns through mosque sermons, rallies, television, radio, newspapers and miking will be carried out to encourage public cooperation in keeping the city clean during Eid-ul-Azha.
