European leaders have reaffirmed Greenland’s sovereignty in a joint security agreement.

Seven European leaders on Tuesday released a joint statement affirming that Greenland’s future rests exclusively with its people and the Kingdom of Denmark, presenting a united stance against external ambitions in the Arctic.

The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom and Denmark described Arctic security as a vital component of international and transatlantic stability. They stressed that European allies are stepping up their presence, investment and military engagement in the region to deter threats and maintain safety.

The statement reaffirmed Greenland’s status within NATO through its constitutional ties with Denmark and highlighted the 1951 defence agreement between Denmark and the United States as a key pillar of Arctic security.

“Security in the Arctic must therefore be achieved collectively,” the leaders said, pledging adherence to the UN Charter, including respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders.

The declaration comes amid growing geopolitical competition over the Arctic’s resources and strategic shipping routes. Through this joint message, the European powers sought to underline that decisions concerning Greenland’s territory lie solely with Denmark and Greenland.
