PM: ‘Family Card’ to place families, not individuals, at the heart of development
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Wednesday said the government is implementing the Family Card programme with the family—rather than the individual—as the central unit of development.
“The current government has introduced the Family Card programme to safeguard citizens’ social security rights, based on the principle that the family is the core unit of development,” he said.
He made the remarks while responding to a tabled question from treasury bench MP AM Mahbub Uddin (Noakhali-1) during the question-answer session in Parliament.
At the initial phase, the Prime Minister said Family Cards were distributed to 37,814 families across 13 districts and three city corporations on March 10.
Tarique added that the programme will be gradually expanded to reach around four crore marginalised families nationwide.
He also expressed hope that poor women from vulnerable families in the Noakhali-1 constituency will be brought under the programme soon.
The parliamentary session began at around 11am, chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, following a 30-minute delay caused by a microphone issue.
A total of four questions were listed for the Prime Minister during the session.
