Nomination papers of 11 candidates, including a Jamaat nominee, were cancelled in Cumilla.
The scrutiny of nomination papers for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election in Cumilla-1, Cumilla-2 and Cumilla-3 constituencies has been completed.
During the verification process, nomination papers of 11 candidates, including a Jamaat-e-Islami nominee, were rejected.
The scrutiny was conducted until Friday noon at the office of Cumilla Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Md Reza Hasan. Of the 31 candidates contesting in the three constituencies, 11 were declared ineligible after their nomination papers were found invalid, primarily due to allegations of forged voter signatures in the submitted documents.
In Cumilla-3, the nomination of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Yusuf Hakim Sohel was cancelled because of an incomplete affidavit. The affidavit failed to include essential information such as the candidate’s citizenship status and whether he holds dual citizenship.
Election officials said the scrutiny of nomination papers in the district’s remaining constituencies will be carried out in stages.
District Returning Officer Md Reza Hasan emphasised that affidavits must contain complete and accurate information, with no details concealed. He added that candidates whose nominations have been rejected will have the right to appeal to the Election Commission for reconsideration.
