Kuwait says it is intercepting Iranian missile and drone attacks

Kuwait’s army said Thursday that its air defences were intercepting missile and drone attacks launched by Iran, as Tehran stepped up strikes against US allies across the Middle East.

Iran has targeted US military bases in Kuwait, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, following extensive US bombardment of targets across Iran on Tuesday.

“Kuwaiti air defences are currently engaging hostile missile and drone attacks following the heinous Iranian aggression,” the Kuwaiti army said in a post on X.

Iranian state television confirmed that Tehran was targeting US bases in Kuwait, describing the attacks as retaliation for what it called Washington’s “crimes against the Iranian people.”

The escalation followed claims by Iran’s Red Crescent that a US strike on Tuesday killed four people, including a child, at a wedding in southern Iran. More than 50 people were reportedly wounded.

Washington did not directly comment on the incident. US Central Command spokesman Tim Hawkins said the US military “never targets civilians,” accusing Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of doing so.

The latest wave of fighting began Sunday, when the United States launched strikes on Iranian targets, marking the first known US attacks on Iran in several weeks.
