The Awami League has lost the confidence and support of the public, the press secretary said.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said the Awami League no longer commands public support and has little prospect of remaining relevant in Bangladesh’s political arena.
Speaking to reporters on Friday morning after visiting the Gour Gopal Seba Ashram in Magura’s New Bazar area, Shafiqul said the party has lost its credibility with the people.
“The Awami League no longer has public acceptance. I see no future for the party in Bangladesh’s politics,” he said.
He alleged that a number of Awami League leaders and activists currently living abroad are spreading false and misleading information.
“They are making baseless claims, including allegations that 3,000 police officers were killed. They are also trying to label hundreds of thousands of young men and women who joined the movement as militants,” he said.
Shafiqul warned that such narratives are misleading the international community and contributing to more dangerous situations.
He further noted that even after 17 months, the Awami League has failed to acknowledge its mistakes.
“The process of collecting nomination papers is now almost complete. Even if they admit their mistakes at this point, the time has already passed,” he added.
Emphasising the importance of accountability in politics, Shafiqul said self-criticism and responsible behaviour are essential for political survival.
“There is no alternative to admitting past mistakes if the party hopes to regain the trust of the people,” he said.
