Bangladesh High Commission Issues Guidelines for Expatriates in Malaysia

The Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has urged Bangladeshi expatriates living and working in Malaysia to follow guidelines issued by the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, the High Commission advised expatriates to remain vigilant and strictly comply with Malaysian laws and regulations.

Dos

Bangladeshis were advised to respect Malaysia’s laws, workplace rules, cyber laws, social media regulations, and religious, social and cultural values.

The High Commission encouraged them to use social media to maintain positive communication with family and friends. They were also asked to follow workplace policies before sharing any information, photographs or videos related to their jobs, employers or workplaces.

Expatriates were urged to exercise caution when dealing with strangers and avoid opening suspicious links, files or messages. They were also advised to remain alert to scams and phishing attempts.

The High Commission further encouraged responsible use of social media, including verifying information before sharing photographs or videos and avoiding suspicious or provocative online activities.

Don’ts

The High Commission advised expatriates not to share, like, comment on or promote content associated with terrorism, extremism or banned organisations.

They were also warned against spreading rumours, misinformation or hate speech, as well as sharing or promoting provocative or controversial content related to the Israel-Palestine, Iran-Israel or other international conflicts if such activities could violate Malaysian laws.

Bangladeshis were advised not to take part in political activities or online campaigns prohibited under Malaysian law. They were also urged not to donate to individuals, organisations or online fundraising campaigns without proper verification.

The High Commission further cautioned expatriates against photographing or recording workplaces, airports, ports, government facilities or security-sensitive locations.

They were also advised never to post their own or others’ passports, visas, national identity cards, other identification documents, bank details or personal information on social media.

Expatriates were urged to avoid posts, comments or discussions that could incite religious, ethnic or racial hatred. They were also warned about scams involving fake job advertisements, illegal visas, promises of quick earnings, suspicious investments and cryptocurrencies.

The High Commission additionally advised them not to post, comment on or react to content that supports or glorifies crimes, violence or other illegal activities.

Fraudulent and excessively costly recruitment processes remain a major concern for Bangladeshi expatriates in Malaysia, with many also reporting complications in obtaining valid documents.

Meanwhile, Malaysian authorities have intensified raids and arrests targeting foreign workers who lack valid documentation.
