Four Arrested in Connection with Former Chhatra Dal Leader’s Murder in Monpura, Remanded for Four Days
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder of a former Chhatra Dal leader following a clash between two groups over embankment construction by the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) in Bhola's Monpura. A court has granted a four-day remand for the accused.
Monpura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ahsan Kabir confirmed the arrests on Friday morning. He stated that police detained the four suspects on Thursday and presented them before the Monpura court in the afternoon. Upon requesting a four-day remand, the court approved it.
The deceased, identified as Md. Rashed (27), was the former general secretary of the Union Chhatra Dal. The arrested individuals—Jasim Mizhi, Rahim Mizhi, Mamun Daktar, and Al-Amin Chowkidar—are residents of North and South Sakuchia Unions in Monpura upazila.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday midnight, Upazila BNP President Shamsuddin Chowdhury Bachchu and Acting General Secretary Md. Mofizur Rahman Milon Matabbar released a press statement blaming the Awami League for the attack.
The statement alleged that a dam construction project in Monpura, initiated under the name of Joynal Abdin Akand, General Secretary of Char Fashion Upazila Awami League, had been ongoing since last year. Several locals, including Rashed, protested against allegations of poor construction quality and irregularities. The contractor overseeing the project allegedly led an attack on the protesters under the direction of Giasuddin Mizi, a South Sakuchia Union Awami League member. During the assault, 10-12 people, including Rashed, were critically injured.
Notably, a violent clash erupted on Wednesday morning between two factions of the local BNP in the Nuruddin Bazar area of Ward No. 9, South Sakuchia Union, over the embankment project. Rashed and ten others sustained injuries. Severely wounded, Rashed was initially taken to Char Fashion Hospital but was later transferred to Faridpur while en route to Dhaka for better treatment. He succumbed to his injuries around 9 pm.
Rashed, son of Abul Kalam from Sakuchia, was among several injured, including Rabbi (25), Shamsuddin (28), Sohan, and Mamun, who were admitted to hospitals in Char Fashion and Monpura.
Following the incident, Rashed's elder brother, Md. Azad, filed a case at Monpura Police Station on Thursday, naming 17 accused individuals. A police operation led to the arrest of four suspects involved in the case.
