FDI Incentive Scheme Policy Gets Cabinet Nod; BMU Act Amendment Approved
The cabinet on Thursday approved the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Incentive Scheme Policy, 2026, and the draft Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) (Amendment) Act, 2026.
The approvals came at the cabinet’s ninth meeting held at the Public Administration Meeting Room of the Cabinet Division at the Bangladesh Secretariat, with Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair.
According to the policy summary, the FDI Incentive Scheme Policy, formulated by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), aims to encourage expatriate Bangladeshis and other citizens to play a greater role in attracting foreign direct investment by offering incentive support.
The cabinet also cleared the draft Bangladesh Medical University (Amendment) Act, 2026, submitted by the Medical Education and Family Welfare Division.
The proposed amendment seeks to broaden the university’s scope in medical services, education and research. To that end, changes to the Bangladesh Medical University Act, 1998 have been proposed to allow the university to establish profit-making or non-profit companies and organisations, acquire shares, and define the types of entities it may form or invest in.
During the meeting, the cabinet also congratulated Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman on being elected President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
