Jamaat has threatened to lay siege to the Election Commission in protest against the ban on mobile phone use near polling centres
The party has demanded the immediate withdrawal of what it calls an “unjust decision.”
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has warned of laying siege to the Election Commission (EC) if the ban on carrying mobile phones within 400 yards of polling centres is not withdrawn immediately.
The warning was issued in a press release today by the party’s Assistant Secretary General and head of its central publicity and media wing, Advocate Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair. He said the decision, taken ahead of the February 12 parliamentary election and referendum, places unnecessary restrictions on voters rather than ensuring their freedom and security.
Describing the move as an “unjust decision,” Zubair said Jamaat is demanding its immediate withdrawal. He added that creating an environment where voters can cast their ballots freely is essential for a free, fair and credible election.
Earlier, National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam also threatened to besiege the EC office if the decision is not revoked.
On Monday, the Election Commission issued a circular to returning officers nationwide banning mobile phones within 400 yards of polling centres on election day.
