Eid holiday travel could be disrupted by severe traffic congestion
Authorities identify 94 congestion-prone points on seven highways.
At least one crore people are expected to leave Dhaka for different parts of the country during this year’s Eid-ul-Azha holiday, with around 85 percent likely to travel by road.
However, severe traffic congestion is feared at 94 spots along seven major highways, including the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. According to highway police, transport associations and related sources, possible causes of congestion include unfit vehicles breaking down on roads, poor management of passenger buses and cattle-carrying trucks, roadside cattle markets, illegal roadside structures, and damaged road sections that remain unrepaired.
Transport owners, workers and other stakeholders stressed the need for stronger traffic management and better coordination among authorities to ease congestion during the Eid rush.
BUET professor Dr. Shamsul Hoque said Eid travel congestion has reduced compared to previous years, but effective coordination among the agencies concerned is still essential.
