Bangladesh aims to place 100,000 workers in Russian labour market
Dhaka, Moscow discuss expanding manpower cooperation and boosting trade ties
Bangladesh and Russia are in talks to increase the number of Bangladeshi workers in Russia to 100,000 within the next year.
Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman proposed the initiative during discussions with Russian authorities, who agreed to pursue the matter on a priority basis. At present, around 10,000 Bangladeshis are employed in Russia, and both sides expect to complete the required formalities soon.
The two countries also agreed that bilateral trade remains far below its potential. Rahman highlighted opportunities to significantly boost Bangladeshi exports to Russia, particularly in the readymade garment and pharmaceutical sectors.
In response, the Russian side welcomed a proposal to host a Bangladeshi business delegation in the coming weeks to explore new trade opportunities.
Cooperation in technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), featured prominently in the discussions. Rahman proposed a visit by a Russian delegation to Bangladesh to share expertise on AI applications in agriculture and healthcare, a suggestion that was readily accepted.
Russian officials also expressed interest in supporting Bangladesh in formulating its national AI policy and establishing centres of excellence in AI.
Rahman is currently on a three-day visit to Russia, accompanied by Humayun Kabir, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Foreign Affairs.
