Dhaka–Bhanga Expressway Crash Death Toll Climbs to Five
The death toll from a collision between a private car and a truck carrying gas cylinders on the Dhaka–Bhanga Expressway has risen to five after another injured passenger died while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College Hospital on Tuesday morning.
The accident took place at around 4:00am on the Bhanga-bound carriageway of the Dhaka–Khulna highway in the Maligram area of Bhanga upazila.
According to police and Fire Service officials, a private car travelling from Dhaka to Jashore rammed into the rear of a truck loaded with gas cylinders that had been stationary on the highway. The force of the crash left the car crushed and lodged beneath the truck.
Six people sustained injuries in the accident. Rescue workers transported them to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced four victims dead on arrival. The two others were later shifted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital for further treatment. One of them died at around 7:30am, raising the number of fatalities to five.
Bhanga Fire Service Station Officer Abu Jafar said firefighters, along with police personnel, rushed to the scene and carried out rescue operations after receiving information about the crash.
Shibchar Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mizanur Rahman said the identities of the deceased could not be confirmed immediately.
“We are working to identify the victims through various channels with support from other police units,” he said.
The wrecked private car and the truck have been taken into police custody and moved to Shibchar Highway Police Station. Legal proceedings are currently underway.
