About 15 people may be missing following a flash flood in Grand Canyon National Park in the United States, the National Park Service said in a statement on Sunday.

Videos recorded by hikers showed a powerful torrent of muddy water sweeping along trails and beneath footbridges, carrying logs and other debris through swollen rivers amid the roar of rushing water.

The flooding struck the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas on Saturday, prompting the National Park Service to work with Arizona authorities to evacuate visitors and determine the whereabouts of those reported missing.

The park service had earlier said more than 20 people were believed to be missing.

The flash flood began at around 2:30 pm Saturday after heavy rainfall over the Kaibab Plateau, according to officials.

No deaths or injuries had been reported, the park service said in an email. By Sunday morning, 62 people had been evacuated, with further evacuations planned.

Officials warned that additional thunderstorms and heavy rain could occur through Monday, potentially triggering more flash floods, debris flows and rockfalls, while also creating hazardous and rapidly changing trail and river conditions.

The flooding also damaged a major water pipeline serving Grand Canyon National Park. As a result, water restrictions were imposed in the park's most visited area, along with a ban on wood and charcoal fires.

Some overnight accommodations will be closed, although the park will remain open for day-use visitors.
