Bangladeshi migrant worker shot dead in Saudi Arabia

A Bangladeshi expatriate was shot dead allegedly by a Saudi youth in Taif, Saudi Arabia, who later died after shooting himself in the head.

The deceased was identified as Md Kamrul Zaman, 37, son of Khorshed Alam of Kazi Bari in Kutubpur village under Begumganj upazila of Noakhali. He was the father of two sons.

The incident took place around 4am local time on Sunday in the Hawaiya area of Taif, according to Abu Naser Chowdhury, a member of Ward No. 3 of Kutubpur Union Parishad.

According to local residents, Kamrul was returning home after completing his shift at a supermarket when the Saudi youth suddenly opened fire on him as he stood on the road speaking to his family over the phone.

Kamrul rushed into the supermarket in an attempt to escape, while two other employees fled in fear. The attacker followed him inside and fired three shots, killing Kamrul on the spot. He then turned the gun on himself and died after shooting himself in the head.

UP member Abu Naser said Kamrul, who came from a farming family, had travelled to Saudi Arabia about two and a half years ago in search of work. His family was informed of his death at around 11am on Sunday.

The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear.
