Bangladesh awaits UAE, India responses on extradition of Benazir, Hadi murder suspects
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Thursday that Bangladesh is awaiting an early response from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and India regarding requests to extradite former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed and three suspects in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi.
“We have completed all legal procedures required to secure the extradition of former IGP Benazir Ahmed from the UAE and the three suspects in the Hadi murder case from India. We hope to receive responses from both governments soon,” he told reporters during a briefing on current issues at the Home Ministry in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Salahuddin said Benazir Ahmed was arrested in the UAE following the issuance of an Interpol Red Notice.
He said Bangladesh submitted all the necessary extradition documents to the UAE within three days of receiving a request from its authorities, despite being given 30 days to do so.
Regarding the three suspects, including the prime accused, Faisal Karim Masud, the home minister said Bangladesh had also sent all required documents to the Indian authorities seeking their extradition.
He noted that the suspects are currently facing trial in India on charges of illegally entering the country, which could delay the extradition process.
However, he said the Bangladesh-India extradition treaty allows the suspects to be handed over to Bangladesh even while legal proceedings against them in India are ongoing.
