Government Condemns Attack on BNP Candidate’s Election Campaign, Orders Full Investigation
The interim government today strongly condemned the violent attack on the election campaign of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-nominated candidate for Chattogram-8, Ershad Ullah, and ordered a full investigation into the incident.
“Preliminary findings from the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) suggest that Ershad Ullah was not the intended target of the attack, but was injured by a stray bullet. The government wishes him a speedy recovery. A full probe has been ordered,” the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing said in a statement on Thursday night.
Expressing deep concern over the criminal act, the government reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the security and rights of all candidates and citizens participating in the democratic process.
The statement added that Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has directed security agencies to spare no effort in identifying and apprehending those responsible and ensuring they are brought to justice swiftly.
“Violence and intimidation have no place in our political or social life. The CMP has already launched a manhunt for the attackers,” the statement said.
The interim government also urged all political parties and their supporters to remain calm, exercise restraint, and help ensure that the February general election is held in an atmosphere of peace, dignity, and fairness.
“The government will take all necessary steps to guarantee secure and peaceful conditions for free, fair, credible, and festive elections across Bangladesh,” it added.
