The next general election is likely to take place on 12 February next year, following a consensus reached between Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman during a meeting in London on Friday.

The agreement was announced in a joint statement, which was read out by Khalilur Rahman, the Chief Adviser’s high representative, at a press conference at The Dorchester hotel on Park Lane.

“The meeting was held in a very cordial atmosphere,” Khalilur said, quoting the statement. “Tarique Rahman proposed that the elections be held before Ramadan next year. BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia also believes that would be an appropriate time.”
