Four-Day Public Holiday Begins Ahead of Bangladesh Election
A large number of people have left Dhaka ahead of the holidays.
A four-day holiday commenced on Tuesday as Bangladesh gears up for the 13th Parliamentary Election and the referendum set for 12 February.
The two-day general holiday declared by the government for 11 and 12 February, combined with the regular weekly holidays on Friday and Saturday (13 and 14 February), has resulted in a four-day nationwide break.
All government, semi-government, autonomous and private offices, as well as educational institutions, will remain closed on 11 and 12 February to allow voters to cast their ballots without disruption and to facilitate the polling process.
Bangladesh Bank has also announced that all banks and financial institutions will remain shut on those two days.
In addition, the Shop Owners Association has decided to close shops, commercial establishments and shopping malls across the country on Wednesday and Thursday.
However, essential services will continue to operate in the public interest despite the general holiday.
