The United States face Belgium on Monday night in Seattle with a place in the World Cup quarter-finals at stake, as an American side buoyed by growing confidence takes on one of Europe's most seasoned teams.

The Round of 16 clash at the Seattle Seahawks' home stadium—renowned as one of the NFL's loudest venues—is expected to unfold in a vibrant atmosphere, with the hosts enjoying increasing support as their tournament campaign gathers momentum.

Before the World Cup began, reaching the knockout stage was widely seen as a realistic objective for the US. But convincing group-stage victories over Paraguay and Australia, followed by a determined 2-0 win against Bosnia despite playing the final 36 minutes with 10 men, have fuelled hopes that Mauricio Pochettino's team can make a deep run on home soil.

Belgium, meanwhile, have progressed without fully living up to expectations. They needed a dramatic comeback against Senegal after trailing for much of the match, eventually scoring twice before sealing victory through a VAR-awarded penalty in extra time, a decision that left their opponents bitterly disappointed.

For Belgium, the tournament could mark the final World Cup appearance of the country's celebrated "Golden Generation," featuring Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Thibaut Courtois.

The US backline, considered a potential vulnerability before the tournament but impressive against Bosnia, is also expected to face a stern test from Belgian winger Jeremy Doku, who is still searching for his best form after a quiet start to the competition.

US Seek Revenge

The encounter also revives memories of the 2014 World Cup, when Belgium eliminated the United States in the Round of 16 after extra time in Brazil. That match is best remembered for goalkeeper Tim Howard's record 16 saves and a spirited late American comeback that narrowly fell short.

This time, however, the US will be without striker Folarin Balogun, who scored against Bosnia before being sent off in the second half. His suspension leaves Pochettino with a major selection dilemma as the Americans look to extend a campaign that has captured the nation's imagination.

"As a team we want to leave our mark on the game and a legacy behind," US midfielder Tyler Adams said.

"We know that the further we go, the more the game is going to grow."
