Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman faced heavy criticism for his substitutions after the Dutch struggled in their opening World Cup match last weekend, but his tactical decisions on Saturday proved decisive as the Netherlands cruised to a commanding 5-1 victory over Sweden.

Football can quickly turn criticism into praise, and Koeman is now likely to be applauded for his decision to hand Brian Brobbey the responsibility of leading the Dutch attack.

Following the Netherlands’ 2-2 draw against Japan in Dallas in their opening Group F fixture, Koeman acknowledged that his substitutions had failed to make the desired impact.

However, there was no doubting his judgment in selecting the 24-year-old Brobbey to spearhead the attack in the team's second match of the tournament, being held across Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The move paid immediate dividends. Brobbey struck twice within the opening 17 minutes, setting the tone for an emphatic Dutch victory that lifted the Netherlands to the top of the group standings.

Brobbey had previously been on the fringes of the national setup, missing out on World Cup qualifying matches and only returning to the squad in March after a year-long absence.

Now, after an impressive Premier League campaign with Sunderland, he appears well positioned to succeed Memphis Depay as the Netherlands’ primary attacking threat.

“I’ve become a better and more complete striker,” Brobbey said earlier this month at the Dutch training camp.

“I’m not just someone who battles defenders anymore. I’ve improved my movement, my ability to find space, make runs behind the defence and drop deeper when needed.”

With creative support from Cody Gakpo on the left, attacking full-back Denzel Dumfries on the right and emerging talent Crysencio Summerville, the Dutch forward line is capable of creating opportunities for any striker.

Brobbey demonstrated against Sweden that he possesses the finishing touch to capitalize on those chances, while also showing a sharpness that Depay has lacked following a prolonged injury absence.

The Netherlands have long been searching for a successor to their all-time leading scorer, and Brobbey made a compelling case on Saturday that he could be the man to fill that role.
