Mirza Fakhrul expresses hope for a prosperous and thriving Bangladesh.
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) presidential candidate, on Thursday expressed confidence in building a prosperous and welfare-oriented “New Bangladesh” ahead of the country’s presidential election.
Speaking to the media before voting began, Fakhrul shared his vision of a country where marginalised communities, workers and daily wage earners can live with dignity and afford basic necessities.
“I dream of a happy, prosperous and welfare-oriented state where marginalised people, hardworking citizens and daily wage earners can afford two meals a day,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of a healthy environment, public safety, youth employment and opportunities for self-employment, particularly for women.
Fakhrul said he believed Bangladesh would emerge as a self-respecting nation on the global stage under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Expressing gratitude to Almighty Allah and the people of Bangladesh, he also thanked BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, saying the country would achieve its ultimate goals under his leadership.
Reflecting emotionally on his transition to a new role, Fakhrul acknowledged that he would miss his previous responsibilities. He urged citizens to cooperate with the government in its efforts to build a welfare-oriented state and prayed for the health and safety of everyone.
Fakhrul also remembered former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, describing her as a major influence on his political journey. He said her words and leadership remained deeply meaningful to him at the moment.
Fakhrul began his political career in left-wing student politics before joining the Bhasani NAP and later becoming a member of the BNP, founded by Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. He was subsequently appointed BNP Secretary General by Khaleda Zia and previously served as a minister and as a member of Parliament from Thakurgaon-1 in 2001.
Voting in the 23rd presidential election began at 2pm Thursday at the Jatiya Sangsad.
